Hi reader

The first submission deadline for #NZWF18 has passed, so a great big shout out to all of you who took advantage and got your shows in to us. We're enjoying checking them out and we're already seeing plenty we look forward to sharing at #NZWF18.

Of course you can still submit via FilmFreeway (see Opportunities below) and - as well as submitting to us - you should take a moment to check out Stareable Fest. The final submission deadline is at the end of the month, and just added to the mix is a US$2K cash prize and a meeting with Bernie Su, winner of a couple of Emmys and creator of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Emma Approved, and Vanity.

We'd also invite those of you with a bit of spare time to join our volunteers, who are beginning to lay the foundations for this year's festival to build on. Check out the deets on The Big Idea or just email us.

The NZ show racking up the largest number of festival selections so far this year is Psusy (above), from #NZWF16 presenter Jaya Beach Robertson. Named for the UK's Pilot Light in early May, Psusy played Washington's DC Web Fest over the weekend, where it picked up a Jury Award.

Also collecting a Jury Award on the weekend was the Candle Wasters' Bright Summer Night, named among the winners at Spain's Carballo Interplay (which uses the catchy tag line "Film and internet in the Death Coast").

This year's Web Series World Cup has already kicked off, and it's great to see some of the #NZWF17 titles continuing their runs - including Steve Baker's Aussie animation This is Desmondo Ray! The show won our Animation award last November and picked up three gongs late last month at the Buenos Aires Web Fest.

Off the cricket pitch, Aussies are on a roll so far this year, with #NZWF17 titles Bruce, Desmondo and High Life currently occupying the podium positions on this year's Web Series World Cup league table.

Around 20 of the shows we were honoured to present last year are still on the festival circuit, with many picking up selections and nominations at upcoming events.

As well as Bruce, Desmondo and High Life, Sally Maclean's Shakespeare Republic has been doing well with selections and nominations at the just-concluded Carballo Interplay (Spain), the upcoming LA Web Fest, Pilot Light (UK) and Die Seriale (Germany). Over the weekend the show was also a finalist at the Ozflix awards, where Restoration took the Best Web Series gong - as well as being named among the winners at DC Web Fest.

One of our favourite finalists last year, Or So the Story Goes, is currently making casting announcements for its next season. Last week it was the sole #NZWF17 title to come away from last week's Indie Series Awards with a victory, when Judith Avers took out the award for Best Soundtrack.

For your viewing pleasure this month we heartily recommend the second season of Roberto Nascimento's The Adventures of Suzy Boon. Roberto was a presenter at our inaugural 2015 edition, and a finalist last year with his series Sui Generis.

Season 2 of Suzy Boon (above) is now live here in NZ on TVNZOD and everywhere on YouTube.

Despite a nose around the crowdfunding platforms, we didn't find any NZ web series currently rattling their tins. But we're happy to see that Path to the Stars and Touch Wood, both of which were looking for lucre last month, concluded their fundraising campaigns successfully. We look forward to seeing the completed seasons.

Thassit for this month apart from a quick ask. If you don't already follow our social media channels, please do. If you do already follow us, thanks, and please recommend us to someone else. We have some ambitious growth targets for our social media this year and would love your help achieving them. Just hit those pretty little icons below.
