If you follow our social media channels, you'll already have gotten a sneaky peek at a few of our selections for #NZWF17. Almost eight months after we opened the doors for submissions we're thrilled to be able to announce the full list.

We received over 140 submissions, up almost 50% from last year. Even though we've expanded our screening programme to two days this year, there were several shows we wanted to select but couldn't squeeze in.

While it's unfair to single out individual shows for special mention, we'd like to welcome back some shows and creators who've been part of previous editions.

Season 1 of High Road won the Best Web Series gong at the inaugural NZ Web Fest, and creator Justin Harwood presented about the show at #NZWF16. We're excited to welcome season 3 of High Road, featuring a turn from an Academy Award winner, to #NZWF17.

Recently qualified as an Academy Award contender for her short Do No Harm, Roseanne Liang presented at #NZWF15, at which Flat 3 was an awards finalist. Team Flat 3 has moved on to Friday Night Bites, and we're very happy to have that as part of the programme this year.

Other presenters from previous editions who have shows selected this year include Lanita Ririnui-Ryan (Poi - Hopes and Dreams), Roberto Nascimento (Sui Generis), Liam Coleman (These Two), and Vicki Makutu who has two shows selected, Hahana and Oompher. For those who like joining the dots we're also happy to have Someday Stories from The Outlook for Someday, which is run by the (very proud) dad of the award-winning Candle Wasters' Claris Jacobs. The Candle Wasters have presented at both our previous editions, were among the winners last year, and also have two shows selected this year, Bright Summer Night and Happy Playland.

Returning finalists from last year include the latest seasons of Auckward Love and Real Tinder Convos. Also we welcome back Simon Leslie, last year's winner of the Best Web Show and Best Pilot gongs, with Art from the Hands of Ngai Tahu.

What has been different this year is the number of international submissions we've received. Among those we've been able to select are plenty who arrive clutching awards from other festivals during the year. Among the most successful is Aussie show High Life, currently leading the Web Series World Cup table and featuring Benson Anthony whom many will recognise from 800 Words.

September seems fairly quiet on other web fest fronts, especially since Irma forced the cancellation of this year's Miami Web Fest, but there are submission deadlines coming up.
