Hi reader

Welcome to our May newsletter.

No matter where you are, some part of your life is probably on indefinite hold at the moment... people you can't see, places you can't go, things you can't get done. It sucks, but there's not much to be done about it – unless you want to put yourself and others at risk.

The NZ Web Fest team is working exactly as it always has – remotely – and we look forward to seeing one another again when we can. A month on from our last update, we're still sure that we will deliver our 2020 edition. We have a Plan A (live and in person), a Plan B (online), and a Plan H for Hybrid, under which we'll make some elements of the festival available online, and present others as live events.

Those of you who attend regularly will be happy to know that 2 of those 3 options mean you'll get your free drinks at the bar after the awards.

We've been busy working our way through the early bird submissions, and are now heading towards our Regular Deadline. If you've got a few moments to spare, please help us spread the word during May – either by pointing your networks at our submissions page ( filmfreeway.com/NZWebFest ) or by sharing one of our social media posts when we promote the deadline.

All Over the Place
Congratulations again to the team who delivered last month's DC Web Fest. We're sorry to see that this year's Miami Web Fest isn't able to go ahead this month, but we're very happy to be able to say that we're still getting one of their selections as part of the programme for #NZWF20. We look forward to sharing Bong Zombies (below). In fact, why wait? Check out the trailer now.

Good luck to this month's Apulia Web Fest, which opens on 29 May, and to the inaugural edition of the Santa Monica Web Fest in early June, both of which will present online.

It's important that we support one another as best we can at the moment, so here are some festivals you can support by submitting ahead of their upcoming deadlines... Baltimore New Media WebFest and Web Fest Berlin (Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror) on 15 May; a boatload on 31 May... Bilbao Seriesland in Spain, London Short Series in the UK, Italy's Sicily Web Fest and New York's Stareable Fest.

First up next month are the deadlines for Minnesota Web Fest on 3 June and, finally, Russia's free-to-enter Realist Web Fest on 5 June.

Here at home
Big shoutout to NZ On Air for turning around an RFP very quickly in April to get some projects moving - including a 48 Hours Lockdown edition and webseries Minoi! Minoi!, Night Shift and Sound Check.

Sadly, adding itself to the local list of cancellations or postponements is the Wairoa Maori Film Festival, which is now aiming to run its 2020 edition on Labour Day weekend in October.

Towards the end of the month, Doc Edge will deliver eight days of industry programming online, with the Festival opening on 12 June - also online. For anyone stuck at home in the late stages of completing a factual film or series, Doc Edge is running a small market event to help promote such content to local and international buyers. Submissions (free!) are open until 15 May, so scurry along here for all the details.

Wrap Your Eyeballs Around...
If you make content for free-to-air TV in NZ, check out How to Dad's guide to the new classifications.

Repeats are the flavour of the month right now, according to broadcasters running out of new content, but Robbie Nicol's The Citizen's Handbook is nice and fresh.

There's plenty of stuff out there you may have missed first time out, or that's worth revisiting. So, this month, take a look at our Linksinbo page, which carries all the links we can't put in our instagram posts... festivals, occasional announcements - and a boatload of series, all in one click-friendly page.

Enjoy :)
