To all of you who submitted ahead of the early bird deadline, a big thankyou. We received over 70 submissions, which is an amazing start, and we're now going through them one by one to make sure they're all working properly before our selection team gets their hands on them.

Our next submission deadline is 31 May, so there's a bit of time to get yourselves organised if you've got work you'd like to share. If you're interested in submitting to other festivals as well, scroll down for more upcoming deadlines.

We're on the lookout for a couple of volunteers for #NZWF17 who can spare an hour or two a week from mid-April for mostly online tasks that will help keep things moving along behind the scenes and make #NZWF17 bigger and better.

If you're willing and able, please email [email protected]. We'd love to hear from you.

Congratulations to NZ winners at recent Web Series World Cup festivals the Buenos Aires Web Fest (BAWF) and Washington's DC Web Fest.

In Buenos Aires season 3 of 2015 Web Series World Cup (WSWC) and NZ Web Fest winner High Road took out the Best Actor award for Mark Mitchinson. Also awarded was Bella Pacific Media's Amy Street, which took out the Best Documentary award at BAWF.

The WSWC published new rankings on 6 April, with High Road at #6. Making the early running is The Wizards of Aus, which had a very successful trip to Buenos Aires.

Fellow WSWC festival DC Web Fest ran on April Fools Day, with High Road and The Water Cooler among the official selections. Both came away with awards, a gold for High Road and a silver for The Watercooler.

NZ selections elsewhere
NZ's most popular vlogger Shaaanxo was a presenter at Asia's biggest social media awards event, Influence Asia, in Kuala Lumpur last weekend. Joining the dots to get back to NZ, Influence Asia's headline performer this year was Jessica Jung, former member of Korea's biggest K-pop group, Girls Generation. Jung's fellow GG member, Taeyeon, shot her MV for I in Auckland, courtesy of ex-pat Kiwi producer (and one of the team behind Seoul Web Fest), David Oxenbridge.

In Los Angeles, High Road continued its successful run by taking out the Best Web Series and Best Actor in a Drama gongs at the Hollyweb Festival. Also a winner at the event was Bright Summer Night (pictured, below) from #NZWF16 winners The Candle Wasters. Bright Summer Night took the Best Drama award.
Staying in the city of angels, Kermath's The Video Store (pictured, below) is the sole NZ selection for this year's LA WebFest. The show has five nominations:
Outstanding Sound Design (Kermath, Thomas Asche)
Outstanding Cinematography (Jonathan Guest, Nick Burridge)
Outstanding Supporting Actress (Imogen Peek-Swaney)
Outstanding Director (Thomas Sainsbury)
Outstanding Actress (Yvette Parsons)
Also up for Outstanding Actress at LA Web Fest is Holly Hargreaves, creator of #NZWF16 finalist Real Tinder Convos. LA WebFest runs 28 – 30 April.

The Video Store is now available on TVNZ OD (where you can also check out Amy Street). Another new arrival is Jamie Curry's series on her trip to Antarctica. Rug up and enjoy - new episodes are coming every Sunday.

#NZWF16 finalist RESET (pictured, below) was recently a finalist in France in th Kids content category of the MIPTV Digital Short Form Series Pitch. Also at MipTV was Aussie online show Doodles, which came home with an International Emmy Kids Award.
NZ On Air has opened applications for its July funding round – the first after the coffers have enjoyed their annual refill and the first under the agency's new platform-agnostic funding strategy.

Applications need to be in by 1 June for Scripted and Factual projects. All applications must be made through the spiffy new online portal, which requires applicants to register. So get on to it.
